How to Maintain a Sew-In and Keep It Looking Fresh
You finally got your sew-in exactly how you wanted it. Now the goal is to keep it looking good while also taking care of the natural hair underneath.
A sew-in may be a protective style, but it isn't a forget-about-your-hair style. Your extensions, scalp and natural hair all need attention while you're wearing the installation.
1. Detangle Your Sew-In Gently
Don't wait until your hair is badly tangled before you start detangling it.
For straighter and looser textures, start near the ends of the hair and gently work upward toward the wefts. Holding the hair while detangling can also help reduce unnecessary pulling on the installation.
Curly and highly textured hair may require a different routine. Work in sections and avoid aggressively brushing through a curl pattern when dry if doing so disrupts the texture.
2. Protect Your Sew-In at Night
Your nighttime routine matters. Tossing and turning against cotton bedding can create friction, tangling and dryness.
Depending on your hairstyle, you may want to loosely wrap, braid or secure the extensions before covering them with a satin or silk bonnet or scarf.
A satin or silk pillowcase can provide another layer of protection.
3. Keep Your Scalp Clean
Your natural hair and scalp still need care underneath your sew-in. Sweat, oil and product can accumulate over time.
How often you need to cleanse your scalp depends on your individual scalp, activity level, products and installation.
When washing, focus on cleansing without aggressively scratching, pulling or disturbing the braid-down.
4. Make Sure Your Sew-In Dries Completely
This is one of the most important parts of washing an installed sew-in.
The extensions may feel dry on the outside while the braided natural hair underneath is still damp. Trapped moisture can create an unpleasant environment for your scalp and natural hair.
Give the installation enough time to dry thoroughly. If you're unsure how to properly cleanse and dry an installed sew-in, professional maintenance can be worth it.
5. Don't Overload the Hair With Products
More product doesn't automatically mean healthier-looking hair.
Heavy oils, serums and styling products can build up on extensions, making the hair look greasy, dull or weighed down.
Start with a small amount of product and add more only when necessary.
6. Limit Excessive Heat Styling
Human hair gives you the freedom to change your style, but daily high-temperature heat can shorten the useful life of your extensions.
Use heat protectant and choose the lowest effective temperature for your styling needs.
If you selected Body Wave, Deep Wave or Curly hair because you love the texture, try working with the existing pattern instead of constantly restyling it with hot tools.
7. Pay Attention to Your Leave-Out
If your sew-in includes leave-out, that natural hair can sometimes receive more heat and manipulation than the rest of your hair because you're trying to keep it blended with the extensions.
Choose a bundle texture that works with the style you're trying to achieve so you don't have to constantly manipulate your leave-out.
Our Human Hair Texture Guide can help you compare Straight, Body Wave, Deep Wave, Curly and other textures.
8. Don't Ignore Matting Around the Nape
The hair around the back of your neck experiences friction from clothing, scarves, jackets and normal movement.
Check this area regularly and gently detangle it before small tangles become larger ones.
Longer hair may require extra attention because more of the hair comes into contact with clothing.
9. Schedule Sew-In Maintenance When Needed
You don't necessarily need an entirely new installation every time your sew-in needs attention.
Professional maintenance can help refresh an existing sew-in when the installation is still in appropriate condition.
At Big Boss Bundles, our Full Sew-In Maintenance service includes a wash, tightening and styling.
10. Know When It's Time to Take the Sew-In Down
Trying to make an installation last forever isn't the goal.
As your natural hair grows, the original braid-down loosens and the installation changes. Excessive matting, discomfort, significant looseness or difficulty properly caring for your scalp can all be signs that the installation needs attention.
Your stylist can help determine whether maintenance is appropriate or whether it's time for removal and a fresh installation.
Can You Wash a Sew-In?
Yes. Both the extensions and your natural hair need appropriate cleansing.
The key is being gentle and making sure everything dries completely afterward.
If you're caring for bundles before or after an installation, read our guide: How to Wash Human Hair Bundles .
Can You Reuse the Bundles After a Sew-In?
Quality human hair bundles may be reusable if they're still in good condition.
Careful removal matters. If the wefts are unnecessarily cut into many small pieces during installation or removal, reusing the hair can become more difficult.
After removal, properly cleanse, condition, dry and store the hair before your next installation.
How Do You Choose Better Hair for Your Next Sew-In?
Maintenance starts with choosing hair that works for your lifestyle. Think about texture, length, quality and how much daily styling you're willing to do.

How Many Bundles Do You Need?
If you're planning your next installation, the number of bundles you need will depend on your length and desired fullness.
Longer lengths may require additional bundles to maintain fullness through the ends.
